TIMES TABLES // Year 2/3 did a great job singing their 2,5 and 10 times tables at Primary Assembly. Have you ever wondered why children can learn the lyrics to songs so easily? It is because music can be used as a Mnemonic device, that is a strategy to assist with memorization. If you can associate the numbers with the sounds in a song, the children will not only learn their tables faster, but retain them much longer than they would memorizing them exclusively through repetition. #heritagecollegesydney #primaryschool #kempscreek

PRIMARY MUSIC // Primary students are experiencing the interplay between sound and movement, in preparation for the Musica Viva show Timmy and the Breakfast Band. Pretending to be marionettes, students listened for four distinct sounds - high pitched mandolin, low pitched mandolin, high pitched cello and low pitched cello, responding to each sound with a different limb. PRIMARY MUSIC // Students in Kindergarten to Year

PRIMARY MUSIC // Students in Kindergarten to Year 6 are preparing activities related to a streamed concert featuring the Musica Viva show Timmy and the Breakfast Band, later this term. Students are learning different ways musicians can communicate with each other without saying a word. Without words, facial expressions, and head and body language become important. This class is performing a musical canon where the leader performs a body percussion pattern to copy. Whilst the rest of the class is performing that pattern, the leader performs the next pattern for them to copy. The leader and the class have to focus especially well as they are seeing one thing whilst doing another. The leader also has to have the next pattern ready in his or her mind without missing a beat. GEOGRAPHY // Year 3/4 are studying the journey of the First Fleet, and are making a giant map to be displayed on the roof of our classroom! On the map we will be following and mapping the route of Governor Arthur Phillip and the rest of the fleet on their journey to Australia. TECH MANDATORY // As part of the Food and Agriculture unit, Year 8 students had to investigate the dietary needs of adolescents, as well as the range of cooking and preparation techniques to maintain nutrient value. CANBERRA EXCURSION // YEAR 5&6 - DAY 3
After a great sleep we packed our bags and said goodbye to our nice hotel. We headed to the International Flag Display and investigated all the flags.

* Australian Parliament House: After a long wait at security, we had a brisk tour around Parliament House. We found there are 200km of corridors and over 4000 rooms in Parliament House! The tour included the marble entrance, the Senate, the House of Representatives (where we tried to pass our own bill - Television Ads Should be Banned on Children's Programmes) and the middle section with the water feature and paintings of previous prime ministers and governor generals.
* Australian Institute of Sport: After changing into more ‘sport friendly’ clothing, we participated in some sporting activities run by the staff at the AIS. They organised some football and European handball games. After this we spent 40 minutes in their Sportex area, where we engaged in some interactive sporting challenges.
* After lunch, we set off for home and arrived at school about 5pm.

It was a fantastic trip and we have all learnt a lot! Everyone had an amazing time. However, we are also very excited to be homeward bound and see our families! #heritagecollegesydney #primaryschool #kempscreek #canberraexcursion

CANBERRA EXCURSION // YEAR 5&6 - DAY 3

CANBERRA EXCURSION // YEAR 5/6 - DAY 2 * Royal Aus

CANBERRA EXCURSION // YEAR 5/6 - DAY 2
* Royal Australian Mint – We heard about the first coins used in Australia, and watched amazing robotic machines and people stamping new coins, ready for circulation. We also heard about how the 1c and 2c coins were taken out of circulation and used to create the bronze medallions for the 2000 Sydney Olympics;
* Australian War Memorial – After seeing some aircraft from different wars that our armed services were involved in, and some personal stories from our guides, we walked around the Hall of Memory and visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier;
* Embassy drive by - we set off on a tour of the different embassies and high commissions in Canberra, including those from New Zealand, Philippines, Tonga, China, Myanmar, Turkey, Israel, The Netherlands and the United States.
* Rose Garden next to Old Parliament House - while waiting for our next venue, we went for a walk around the Rose Garden next to Old Parliament House. We also walked past the steps out the front of OPH, and Mr Russell told us about a famous event that happened on the steps when a Prime Minister of Australia had just been sacked by the Governor General!
* National Electoral Education Centre - we learnt about the process of elections and voting in Australia, including the history of democracy in our country. We also learnt that the same Prime Minister who was sacked was actually the local member of the region our school is in – Werriwa! We carried out our own vote and in a surprise upset elected Dr Apple to office!
* Mount Ainslie - we travelled up to the top of Mt Ainslie to view Canberra from above. We saw the sun setting and used our photography skills to get some great photos;
* Captain Cook Globe/Lake Burley Griffin - on the way back to our accommodation, we stopped for a quick look at the Captain Cook Globe, and looked out on the lights of Canberra and the Parliamentary Triangle. #heritagecollegesydney #primaryschool #kempscreek #canberraexcursion

CANBERRA EXCURSION // Students from Year 5&6 have

CANBERRA EXCURSION // Students from Year 5&6 have recently undertaken an education tour of the national capital, over three days. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.
DAY 1 - HIGH COURT OF AUSTRALIA / QUESTACON
* Left school around 9:30am
* Arrived at the high court and split up so we could all tour around the court rooms. We heard some interesting presentations and some recent cases about appeals and constitutional law.
* Walked around the Queen Elizabeth Terrace near the lake Burley Griffin, and up through Reconciliation Place to Questacon.
* Experienced some wonders of science, space, materials and forces in the multilevel galleries of Questacon.
* Had a lovely dinner, and headed to bed after some diary/reading/games. #heritagecollegesydney #primaryschool #kempscreek #canberraexcursion #highcourt #questacon
