LITERACY // In Year 2, students know how to decode

LITERACY // In Year 2, students know how to decode words and are now focusing on fluency and reading for meaning. The Year 2 Initialit program focuses on reading, comprehension, spelling and grammar. Students are learning different comprehension strategies to help them understand what they are reading and practising reading with expression. They are learning various ways to spell sounds and are introduced to some simple grammar concepts. We look at some excellent storybooks which help students to develop their vocabulary and encourages them to make connections between the story and their own world. Students complete writing tasks that relate to the storybook.
Students are encouraged to choose a variety of books they enjoy and are interested in and to spend at least 15 minutes a night reading at home. To support them in developing their literacy skills you can talk to them, explain new words, ask them to tell you about their day, read to them, sing songs, visit the library, play word games such as I spy, hangman, crosswords etc. #heritagecollegesydney #primaryschool #kempscreek

Waringah Aquatic Centre on Monday to
represent our school in 35 events between them. Of the 10 students who attended, we had
multiple podium finishes and had 2 of our students
place as age champions -

SCIENCE // In Science, Year 2 have been learning a

SCIENCE // In Science, Year 2 have been learning about how volcanoes can cause changes to the earth's surface. We created our own paper mache volcano and put inside it some vinegar, dishwashing liquid and warm water. When we added some bicarbonate of soda it made a fantastic eruption which was very exciting to see! #heritagecollegesydney #primaryschool #kempscreek

HARMONY DAY // Harmony Day is an annual celebration in Australia that occurs on 21 March. The day aims to promote cultural diversity, respect, and inclusiveness in the Australian community. It is a day that highlights the importance of respecting different cultures and traditions as well as celebrate the rich cultural diversity that makes Australia a unique and special place.
Students were encouraged to wear an orange accessory and all classes completed activities to recognise this Day. (Samples pictured are by Year 3 students). Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. Harmony Day is also a day for recognizing the contributions that migrants and refugees have made to Australian society. The event highlights the positive impact that diverse cultures have on the social, economic, and political fabric of Australia. #heritagecollegesydney #primaryschool #secondaryschool #harmonyday

MUSIC // In year 1 music, students have been busy

MUSIC // In year 1 music, students have been busy playing music games using percussion instruments and learning a song for assembly. Recently, students have learnt the rhythm names ta, ti-ti and sa, and have been thoroughly enjoying clapping, playing and writing these new rhythms. This week, students become composers and composed their own one bar rhythm. DESIGN YOUR DREAM CAR // 6/5/4 designed their drea

DESIGN YOUR DREAM CAR // 6/5/4 designed their dream cars for the ‘Toyota Design a Dream Car’ competition. Students were asked to think about something in the world that could be improved by their car design. They have invented some awesome car designs to help with different issues facing our planet.
Some of the features include plant- powered vehicles, cars that can rescue people stuck in war zones and natural disasters, cars powered by friendship, cars that run on the power generated by filtering flood waters to create clean water, vehicles with many rooms that homeless people can live in, cars that plant trees as they drive, and cars that rehabilitate and rehome animals that have lost their natural habitat. By experimenting with different angles and materials, they discovered how light behaves as it moves through different mediums. #heritagecollegesydney #secondaryschool #kempscreek$

GEOGRAPHY EXCURSION // A compulsory element of the Geography course involves students conducting fieldwork. Year 10 examined current coastal management issues at Cronulla, Wanda and Eloura beaches. Students along with AUSECO Environmental Scientists/Rangers, investigated coastal processes by measuring and studying elements of a natural/re-established sand dune, such as size and shape, vegetation type and cover and wind speed. Students used clinometer's, anemometer's, tape measures and completed field sketches and dune profiles. Despite being 37oC, students enjoyed the day out exploring outdoors. #heritagecollegesydney #secondaryschool #kempscreek

SCIENCE // Year 9 students learned about the importance of chlorophyll and starch in leaves. They extracted the green coloured pigments using methylated spirit and discovered how plants use them to absorb light and produce energy through photosynthesis. #heritagecollegesydney #secondaryschool #kempscreek

SCIENCE // In year 8, students had the opportunity to collect their own cheek cells and dye them with methylene blue. Using microscopes, they observed the unique characteristics of their own cells and learned about the different components that make up living organisms. This hands-on activity helped them understand the importance of microscopy in the field of microbiology. #heritagecollegesydney #secondaryschool #kempscreek

challenge themselves to design and produce a creative yet very functional minimalist desk lamp which does not only solve their client’s lighting needs but acts as an ornamental piece of artwork for his/her chosen location. #heritagecollegesydney #secondaryschool #kempscreek

ENGLISH // One of the requirements for English is

ENGLISH // One of the requirements for English is to look at Australian literature. Year 3 have been studying "The Adventures of Snugglepot and Cuddlepie," written and illustrated by May Gibbs. The characters and settings in this book are created from the Australian bush. Snugglepot and Cuddlepie are two gumnuts babies off on an adventure to see humans. Along the way, they meet friends like Mr Lizard and Ragged Blossom, as well as enemies like Mrs Snake and her henchmen the bad banksia men. Using two gumnuts, a banksia seedpod and modelling clay, each student has begun to create their own scene involving Snugglepot, Cuddlepie and a bad banksia man. They have been working with persistence and care to create the tiny gumnut babies who wear the little gumnut as their hat. #heritagecollegesydney #primaryschool #kempscreek

MUSIC - ENCORE AT THE SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE // Students from 9-12 Music classes travelled into Circular Quay to enjoy a night of music. Students watched a showcase of performances and compositions from the highest achieving HSC Music 1, 2, and extension students from 2022. GEOGRAPHY // Year 7 students investigated the land

GEOGRAPHY // Year 7 students investigated the landscape and landforms of protected coastal wetlands at Sydney Olympic Park. Students undertook hands-on fieldwork tasks including vegetation transects, using plant identification charts, field sketches, weather instruments and Geographic Information System (GIS) spatial technology. Students also learned how the Wangal (the traditional custodians of the grounds surrounding Sydney Olympic Park) sustainably utilised wetland environments. #heritagecollegesydney #secondaryschool #kempscreek

BIBLE // Have you wondered how there came to be so many different languages in the world? This week, Year 2 found out that it was when people tried to build 'The Tower of Babel' to reach heaven and God confused their language so the work could not proceed.
