Year 7 have been learning the acoustic guitar for the performance requirement of the mandatory Music curriculum. Students have been learning various strumming patterns and have learnt that most pop songs only use four chords! Kinder and Year 1 have been learning basketball skills such as dribbling with left or right hands, chest passes and bounce passes. They have also been learning to shoot baskets through Golden Child and Bump games. We have seen a huge improvement in their skills over the past few weeks. FAMILIES // Last week in School Readiness Class, students looked at all the members of the family. We talked about features that we needed to add to create a person. MUSIC - XYLOPHONES // Year 2 has been composing sh

MUSIC - XYLOPHONES // Year 2 has been composing short melodies, organising sound by combining rhythm and pitch. They also perform their melodies by singing, and playing them on xylophones. The xylophone has a horizontal layout like a keyboard, but pitch is visible as the higher bars to the right are shorter than the lower ones to the left. This is a helpful stepping stone to aid knowledge of the geography of a piano/keyboard in subsequent years, as all the keys on pianos and keyboards are the same size, so pitch is not obvious! #heritagecollegesydney #primaryschool #kempscreek

BOOK-IN-A-BOX // This term Year 6 were challenged

BOOK-IN-A-BOX // This term Year 6 were challenged to make a Book-in-a-Box. Students were asked to choose a book and bring it to life by decorating a box and placing relevant objects inside to represent the main ideas/characters of the book. They also had to write a short passage about how each object related to their book.
This was a good opportunity for students to work on a bigger project over a number of weeks in preparation for the tasks they will be involved with next year in High School.

CRUNCH & SIP // Crunch&Sip® (Fruit break) is a set time in primary schools for students to ‘refuel’ on vegetables, salad and fruit and to ‘rehydrate’ with water. Students who are not hungry and are well hydrated, perform better in the classroom, show increased concentration and are less likely to be irritable or disruptive. #heritagecollegesydney #primaryschool #kempscreek

GEOGRAPHY // In Geography, Year 1 students are exploring how tourism connects people to places. Students are creating their own tourism brochure to advertise their very own tours of South Africa and China. These tourism brochures show how to get to China and South Africa and what to see and do when you are there. These students would make fantastic tour guides and we are sorry families - Year 1 will now be convincing you to travel! Next stop... SCHOOL READINESS PROGRAM // In Week 4 we read "Found You, Little Wombat". We created little wombats, using our fine motor skills to scrunch the brown crepe paper into wombat fur. How to be a great friend was also a topic that we worked on. Each of us is a little Prince or Princess (as you can see from the crowns that we are making) and have to treat each other as such.
In Week 5 we read "Giraffes Can't Dance." We made Giraffes to take home. We have also been working through the Pre-Lit Program and are learning to count the syllables in words. They have come so far in just a few weeks! #heritagecollegesydney #primaryschool #kempscreek
