AISNSW Institute: research shows NSW Independent school students among world’s best academic performers
The AISNSW Institute released its first research paper last... week, which showed students in NSW Independent schools rank among those in the best performing systems in the world.
The paper Academic Achievement in NSW Independent Schools analysed the latest available results of students in NSW Independent schools participating in the OECD’s Program of International Student Assessment (PISA) 2012, which focused on mathematical literacy. The analysis countered widely-held perceptions that the decline in the performance of Australian students in international assessments over the past 10 years is uniformly reflected across all school jurisdictions.
NSW Independent school students outranked all the Australian jurisdictions examined.
In brief, nine countries significantly improved their mathematical literacy performance between 2003 and 2012, and 13 countries including Australia declined significantly. Australia is now ranked 19th among participating countries.
The analysis showed there are few countries with better rankings than the NSW Independent sector. Many countries including Finland, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom are ranked lower.
The analysis, which was undertaken by Dr Gary Marks from the Australian Catholic University, also showed that socioeconomic background is a relatively weak factor affecting student performance. More significant factors are quality teaching and school leadership, parents’ own education levels and the value they place on education, and students’ own attitudes.
Features of high performing schools were also analysed. The paper concluded the higher achievement of students in NSW Independent schools is associated with strong teacherstudent relations, a good disciplinary climate, effective classroom management and a sense of belonging at school.
